Used Volkswagen Tiguan Crossover 2007 - 2016 reliability

Mechanically, the Tiguan shares many components with the Golf, which has a proven reliability record.

However, there have been issues with the automatic parking brake failing to release, particularly when on a slope. This can cause damage as the engine drags the car forward. Replacement parts can be expensive, so make sure the parking brake works correctly with no warning lights.

Exterior rear door handles have also been known to stick in the open position, preventing the doors from closing when shut from the inside. This fault stems from a design flaw that required the door to be dismantled and corrected under warranty. A VW dealer will be able to tell you if this work has been done.

Check the air conditioning blows both cold and hot air. This problem stems from an issue with the air-con's switchgear rather than the more expensive compressor or condenser.

Serious engine and fuel pump failures have also occurred, although these are rare.

On the whole, however, the Tiguan has an excellent reliability record and has always done well in our surveys. Indeed, the latest post-2017 model finished in top position in the small SUV class aged 0-3 years in our most recent study, with an excellent overall score of 97%. VW as a brand finished in a slightly disappointing 22nd place out of 32 manufacturers, though.
