The VW Golf is a highly recommendable choice if you want a family car. Some rivals are more spacious and better to drive, and premium rivals have higher-grade interiors, but a 2024 update has improved the usability of the Golf's infotainment. We think Match trim with the 1.5 TSI 150 petrol engine is the best combination – although company car drivers will be better off choosing the Golf eHybrid, which has a class-leading electric-only range.

The GTE plug-in hybrid features more aggressive looks than lesser Golfs, plus it's loaded with standard kit. The list includes adaptive suspension, three-zone climate control,  wireless phone-charging, front and rear parking sensors, a rear-view camera, adaptive cruise control, traffic sign recognition and blindspot monitoring.

This plug-in hybrid hot hatch combines a turbocharged 1.5-litre petrol engine with an electric motor to produce a total of 268bhp. The 0-62mph sprint takes 6.6sec, plus the GTE can officially run for up to 82 miles purely on electric power.
