The Ford Explorer is better to drive than its Volkswagen ID 4 sister, plus its interior offers more wow factor and our favourite version can cover more than 300 miles between charges in real-world conditions. If you value comfort and quality, though, the Renault Scenic is more likely to appeal – especially given that it’s currently cheaper to buy and doesn’t sacrifice range.

Range-topping Premium trim brings ambient interior lighting, a powered tailgate, a panoramic glass sunroof, 20in alloy wheels (instead of 19s) and Matrix LED headlights which can remain on high beam without dazzling other drivers. However, the price of the Explorer starts to look a bit punchy.
