The BMW i5 Touring is a practical, hushed and luxurious choice. Plus, it’s surprisingly affordable to run as a company car, thanks to its low benefit-in-kind tax rating. It’s just a pity its high starting price will rule it out for a lot of private buyers.

Sport Edition trim is the cheapest available, and gets you 19in alloy wheels, faux-leather upholstery, climate control, adaptive LED headlights, heated front seats and a heat pump to warm the interior of the car efficiently in cold weather. Given that the i5 is already very expensive, this is the trim we'd go for.

Even with this entry-level motor, the i5 is far from slow, accelerating from 0-62mph in 6.1sec. What’s more, its single-speed automatic gearbox helps to ensure that the power arrives without any obvious letup. That said, the equivalent Porsche Taycan Sport Turismo needs just 4.8sec to get to 62mph and actually has a slightly longer official range.
