Used test: Peugeot 208 vs Renault Clio vs Volkswagen Polo costs
These small yet practical hatchbacks are all much more affordable at two years old, but which is the best buy?...
What will they cost?
Costs, equipment, reliability, safety and security
The Peugeot 208 and VW Polo will each cost you about £14,000 to buy at two years old, whereas good examples of the Renault Clio can be picked up for £13,000.
This saving could come in handy, because the Clio is the least efficient of the trio, averaging 45.3mpg in our tests. True, the Polo is only slightly easier on fuel (it returned 45.4mpg), but the 208 managed 47.9mpg.
On the other hand, the 208 will be the priciest to insure. It sits in insurance group 19, whereas the Clio is in group 10 and the Polo group 8. A fixed price service of the 208 costs £279, while it'll be £265 for the Clio. The Polo comes in at £364.
With the Clio being a range-topping model, it's well equipped. Features such as keyless entry and climate control came as standard from new, whereas the Polo does without the former and both of its rivals make do with more basic air conditioning.
Although the Peugeot 208 didn't feature in our latest What Car? Reliability Survey the Renault Clio and VW Polo did, ranking 23rd and 27th respectively. Considering the small car class was made up of 28 cars, those results are disappointing. As brands, Peugeot came 28th out of 32 manufacturers featured, while Volkswagen placed 22nd and Renault 18th.
When Euro NCAP safety tested these cars, the 208 was awarded four stars out of five, whereas the Clio and Polo got top marks.
