Our verdict

Which of these cars is better will heavily depend on your own personal wants and needs, making naming a winner more tricky than in the vast majority of group tests. As such, we've had to make some educated guesses about you – feel free to disagree with them. 

Firstly, we imagine space and practicality are of low priority, seeing as you're mulling over a pair of small, three-door, four-seaters. As such, the Mini Electric's advantage in those areas becomes somewhat watered down. 

We reckon range is higher up the priorities list – perhaps the commute isn't far, but most of us venture outside of the urban sprawl at least once in a while – and, in that regard, the Fiat 500 Electric is the more viable option: its smoother ride and quieter cruising manners also contribute to it being the better long-distance companion. 

So, for the above reasons – among a few others like cheaper insurance and servicing – the 500 Electric takes first place.
