Our verdict

The Honda Civic Type R is a deeply satisfying car to drive fast, and if you want a car that never stops exciting you, you won’t be disappointed. Practical elements such as its vast boot also help it refrain from being a one trick pony.  

However, the M135i is impressively fun and practical as well, plus it possesses elements of luxury and refinement that its winged competitor can't match. The ride is more settled and there's less engine drone on the motorway, not to mention it has a far more premium interior and a better infotainment system. The M135i simply the easier used hot hatch to recommend, so it comes out on top.
