Used Car of the Year Awards 2022: Large SUVs
With demand for used cars on the rise, you’ll want to know which are the best buys. That’s where our annual Used Car Awards come in. These are our favourite large SUVs...
Peugeot 5008 (2017-present)
Price from £18,000
Hard as it might be to believe, YouTube started as a dating website, before a rethink helped turn it into the $20 billion video sharing platform we know today. And the Peugeot 5008 also benefited from being reinvented, when the second-generation version was introduced in 2017.
Out went the functional but frumpy MPV styling of the original, and in its place we got a far more desirable SUV body. Crucially, while the 5008 became a hell of a lot more stylish, practicality wasn’t sacrificed; it can seat up to seven, and third-row passengers get far more room than they do in the Seat Tarraco or Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace.
The Skoda Kodiaq is a closer match for space, but its interior doesn’t feel as plush as the 5008’s. Plus, the 5008 is a quieter cruiser with a more comfortable ride, and its reliability record is competitive.
Engines include a 1.6-litre petrol and 1.5 and 2.0-litre diesels, but the 1.2-litre turbo petrol (badged Puretech 130) strikes the best balance between performance, refinement and affordability.

Also consider...
Skoda Kodiaq (2017-present)
Price from £17,000
As good as the Peugeot 5008 is, the Kodiaq is also worth considering, not least because there are a greater number of used examples our there to choose from. It also offers a more user-friendly infotainment system, and is remarkably composed and agile for such a big, tall car. Meanwhile, the Kodiaq’s reliability is up there with the very best large SUVs.

Audi Q5 (2017-present)
Price from £21,000
If you’ve got a bigger budget and want your SUV to have a premium badge, the Audi Q5 becomes our best buy. It’s more comfortable and refined than rivals such as the BMW X3 and Land Rover Discovery Sport, but its biggest strength of all is its interior; it looks and feels a cut above the rest. Just bear in mind that the Q5 is a strict five-seater, unlike the Land Rover, which is available with seven.
