Used Car of the Year Awards 2022: Family SUVs
With demand for used cars on the rise, you’ll want to know which are the best buys. That’s where our annual Used Car Awards come in. These are our favourite family SUVs...
Skoda Karoq
Price from £14,000
If it’s true that success doesn’t come from what you do occasionally, but what you do consistently, the sky is the limit for the Skoda Karoq. Rather than trying to be too specialised in any one area, Skoda’s family SUV is strong across the board.
Practicality heads the long list of attributes. The Karoq’s robust, spacious and user-friendly interior features flexible sliding and removable rear seats (on some models), and the boot is one of the biggest in this class.
The Karoq rides and handles capably, too, proving comfier than most similar-priced rivals, including the Peugeot 3008 and Seat Ateca. Our preferred 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine combines gutsy performance with excellent fuel economy, while being more refined than that of the hybrid Toyota C-HR. What’s more, the Karoq is proving more reliable than the Ateca and Volkswagen Tiguan, with a strong 96.5% score in our latest survey.
Given how well equipped it is and what a complete package it makes, the Karoq is a bargain at around £15,000 for a 2018 example.

Seat Ateca (2016-present)
Price from £11,000
A previous award winner, the Ateca is not only practical but also capable of putting a bigger grin on your face than the Skoda Karoq on a winding road, thanks to agile, well-balanced handling. The trade-off is a firmer ride, a slightly less robust (but still good) reliability record and none of its rival’s clever seating, but the Ateca remains fine value and one of our favourite family SUVs.

Volkswagen Tiguan (2016-present)
Price from £14,000
The Tiguan is a great all-rounder for those looking for something fancier than the Skoda Karoq but still wanting value
for money. Not only does it have all the premium trappings of a BMW X1, but the Tiguan is also more refined than that car, plus it has far more modern technology than an older example of the previous-generation Audi Q3 that costs the same money.
