Used Car of the Year Awards 2022: Coupé/Convertible
With demand for used cars on the rise, you’ll want to know which are the best buys. That’s where our annual Used Car Awards come in. These are our favourite coupés/convertibles...
BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé
Price from £10,000
Is the 4 Series Gran Coupé cheating to win in this category? We don’t think so. A coupé should offer a touch more glamour than a saloon, and this one adds a handy dose of practicality to the mix. It’s better to drive than its Audi A5 Sportback and Volkswagen Arteon rivals, too.
Is it as sporty as the Audi TT? Well, no, but it’s not as far behind as you might think. It’s available with rear or four- wheel drive, there’s plenty of grip and the handling is poised and precise. Its engines are excellent, too; petrol options range from the 184bhp four-cylinder 420i to the rapid 326bhp six-cylinder 440i, and there are economical four-cylinder and smooth six-cylinder diesels.
Plus, with five doors, reasonable rear head room and a generous boot, it’s a better fit with family life than the TT, and its classy interior runs that car’s close for quality.
A 2019 420i Gran Coupé in M Sport trim costs around £21,000 – a huge saving on what it cost new. There might be a few sunny days when you wish you’d plumped for a convertible like the Audi A3 Cabriolet, but in the BMW you’ll be smiling all year round.

Audi TT (2014-present)
Price from £14,000
Lively performance and eager handling are just a few notes in the stylish TT’s repertoire. In coupé form, it’s also surprisingly practical, with small back seats and a decent-sized hatchback boot – although it can’t hold a candle to the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé in that regard. A three-year-old 1.8-litre petrol TT costs around £20,000, and you get a lot of sporty sophistication for the money.

Audi A3 Cabriolet 2014-present
Price from £10,000
If you’re willing to sacrifice the BMW’s five-door practicality for summertime indulgence, the A3 Cabriolet is hard to beat for the money, and a much better all-rounder than its DS 3 Cabrio and Mini Convertible rivals. Plus, it’s pretty good to drive, with precise steering and punchy yet fuel-efficient engines. A 2017 car costs around £17,000 and will hold onto its value tightly.
One we found 2017 Audi A3 Cabriolet 1.4 TFSI Sport, 43,500 miles Price £17,495
