Promoted: The New Nissan LEAF – World Green Car Of The Year

Since its launch, the all-electric Nissan LEAF has been wowing critics, winning accolades and setting sales records. In January, it was named ‘Best Electric Car’ in the hotly contested 2018 What Car? Awards. Now we’ve got another piece of silverware, which we’re naturally proud to tell you about.

At the New York International Auto Show, the New LEAF was named 2018 World Green Car Of The Year. As the first fully electric vehicle to receive the prize, it’s yet another shining example of how the LEAF is setting benchmarks for electric vehicle design.

Building on the success of the original LEAF – with 300,000 sold around the world since 2010 – the second-generation New LEAF takes the idea of easy, hassle-free all-electric motoring to a new level.

With an even greater range of up to 168 miles (WLTP Combined Cycle) and the ability to rapid-charge the battery to 80% capacity in around 40-60 minutes, the New LEAF is a perfect fit for busy lives.

It also has a spacious interior for five, class-leading luggage volume, and clever driving aids – such as ProPILOT automatic emergency braking and automated parking, and a simple-to-use e-Pedal – which take the stress out of driving, and make motoring safer.

This is probably why orders for the New LEAF have topped 20,000 since it went on sale late last year – making it Europe’s fastest-selling electric vehicle. And, thanks to our latest award, it’s now – officially MPG – the World Green Car Of The Year. Accolades for electric cars don’t come much better than that.

View from the hot seat

Great reviews from the motoring press are important, but we love to know what our drivers think, too. That’s why we’re delighted that the first UK customer for the New Nissan LEAF was a long-time LEAF fan.

Former police officer Leo Moran from Hartlepool is already an electric motoring convert, having bought a LEAF a year ago. As soon as the New LEAF was announced, he made enquiries and placed his order.

“I’ve driven many cars of all shapes and sizes, and many performance cars, but I can say hand on heart that the LEAF is the best car I’ve ever driven,” he said. “I spent last year singing the praises of the LEAF. Now that I have the New LEAF, I can’t wait to get out and play, go on adventures and enjoy the drive.

“The e-Pedal gives so much back to the driver. You become more aware of your surroundings, and drive in an entirely different way. With the bigger battery and increased range, I can visit friends in Scotland and Manchester on one charge. I’m looking forward to seeing how far I can go.”

No fuel is good fuel

Both Nissan and What Car? are committed to helping drivers understand the real cost of motoring. True MPG is What Car?’s guide to how many miles a petrol, diesel or hybrid car really does to the gallon. Still, when it comes to fuel efficiency, no petrol. diesel or hybrid engine can beat the New Nissan LEAF: it uses no combustible fuel at all.
