New Toyota GR Supra vs Porsche 718 Cayman: verdict

If power corrupts, having less of it isn’t a bad thing, right? To find out, we're pitting the new four-cylinder Toyota Supra against its main sports car rival from Porsche...

Porsche 718 Cayman vs Toyota GR Supra rears

Our verdict

It may not be the best Cayman you can buy, but boy is this entry-level model an excellent sports car if your budget is around £50,000. It’s seriously fast in a straight line and delivers quick lap times on a track day just as well as it does excitement on the road. Given that sports cars are primarily about fun, it has to be the winner.

And the Supra? Well, it can be entertaining at lower speeds, but its twitchiness when driven hard makes it a much less capable machine than the Cayman. It’s far more at home when treated as a fast GT car, in which vein its great infotainment system, bundles of kit, good economy and more relaxing cruising manners suit its character well.
