A Ferrari driver has been fined 182,000 for speeding in Switzerland.

The millionaire was caught driving a Ferrari Testarossa through a village in the east of the country.

According to the courts website, the driver a repeat offender was driving at 137kmh (85mph) in a 50mph zone.

The huge fine was based on the unnamed motorist's personal wealth believed to be in the region of 14 million and previous offences.

Judges at the court in St Gallen said: 'The accused ignored elementary traffic rules with a powerful vehicle out of a pure desire for speed.'

It is more than double the amount of Switzerland's previous record speeding fine of 74,000 (around 66,000), which was imposed on a motorist driving a Porsche in 2004.
