Car of the Year Awards 2024: Best sports SUV for thrills
If you’d really like to be driving a sports car but can’t compromise on practicality, a sports SUV is just the ticket. The best are fun to drive, with scintillating pace and agile handling...
Porsche Cayenne S
When a premium car maker treats one of its models to a comprehensive facelift, it’s rare that the best version becomes more attainable as a result. However, that’s precisely the case with the latest Porsche Cayenne.
True, it’s still far more costly than the Ford Puma ST, but no longer must you ascend to the all-singing, all-dancing Cayenne GTS to revel in the power and melodious soundtrack of Porsche’s exceptional V8; the cheaper S now comes with a tweaked version of the same engine.
As you might imagine from a sports SUV with 468bhp (15bhp more than the old GTS) and 443lb ft of torque, the S is effortlessly quick; 0-60mph takes just 4.7sec. But what makes the S our favourite is that it’s more fun in bends than the heavier, pricier hybrid models. And if you add air suspension and active anti-roll bars (£4306), you can throw it around like a sports car, revelling in the precision and dexterity of its handling. In short, it’s a riot.
